At the height of the refugee crisis in Europe, we wanted to help our audience feel empathy with people who’d fled their homeland and were living in camps. I worked with another producer on my team to create a Facebook Messenger bot, which would ping users throughout the day with information on what a refugee family would be doing at that time and allowed them to interact to get more info (she did the coding, I did the writing). It felt more intimate than yet another story about the numbers: Users were getting the information in the palm of their hand, via an app that they would usually use to message their friends and family, in a personal and interactive way.
